Baleal Belly

First just a few words of culinary wisdom from my side: Don’t eat or buy at places you have at home and don’t shop at overpriced tourist traps. Try to support local.

Of course, the best idea would be to cook for yourself. Fish, meat, fruit, and vegetables are available on Saturdays at the farmers’ market in Peniche (Mercado Municipal Peniche). For certified and organic; check out the stand of Fazedinha!

Finding a restaurant or café with good vegan or vegetarian food in Peniche, Baleal, or Ferrel is one of the harder tasks in life.
Thankfully, the days when all you could get was an omelet with rice and fries are over. Usually, every restaurant has one or two vegetarian options.

Sol
Call it a hipster place BUT easily the best coffee house worldwide!
The finest coffee, passionately roasted and poured by the two enthusiasts Lawrence and Enrico.
Delicious food by Anya. If you just have time for one restaurant or café, this is the place. Usually I go there daily, twice…

Ferreleja
You can’t get more Ferrel style than this. Best price-performance ratio you can get. Get the cheese toast (Tosta com queijo), it’s a filler.

Paderia do Marquito
Good croissants, the best pastel de nata and other treats. The coffee has been criticized but with a bit of luck, you can meet the woman of your life in there.

Ponto de Encontro
Right on the beach, great view, family-run, friendly and tasty fries, as well as vegan & vegetarian sandwiches.

Sushi Fish
If you’re looking for something special, head to Sushi Fish in Baleal. A quiet, dim atmosphere, and great sushi.

Caseirinha
The Caseirinha in Ferrel isn’t a restaurant you go to when you’re looking for something special. You go here to get your fill. That works pretty well, as long as you’re not a vegetarian.
There’s chicken with chicken, ribs, rabbit, and more chicken. As well as rice and fries. Always simple, honest, good and inexpensive.
VEGGIE TIP: Soup of the day from the takeaway. Except for the one with the chouriço. (1 liter for €2.50)

Riclé
Until recently, only Penicheiros and Ferrelejos were found here.
Since a veggie burger has made it to the menu, it’s now a meeting place for surf instructors, surf students, tourists, and nomads from all over the world.

O Talho
O Talho in English means The Butcher. Anyone who thinks the name doesn’t reflect the program is mistaken. The large dining room raises the bar considerably for the term “hunter-gatherer” and suggests the owner regularly goes on a safari hunt in Africa.
Even though there’s the occasional fish dish and a vegetarian lasagna, the most committed carnivore is likely to question their eating habits in this setting.
Not for vegetarians and difficult for animal lovers to bear. If you still want to try it, try Tamboril from the Atlantic/Canyon is €34 for two people.

Funky Donkey
A pizzeria run by French usually says it all. Surprisingly though, it’s the best Neapolitan in the area. Maybe somewhere in the mix an Italian was involved.

The Base
Finish a beautiful day, get in your dancing shoes or wash away the drop ins from the leashy local Lonboarders with the best cocktails in town!
