Getting around Peniche and Baleal by bike is still the best way. Especially during summer or on the weekend, when the roads are packed and the cars go at a snail’s pace toward the beach. On a bike you easily get past everyone, you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space, and you can see more scenery anyway. What is better and also healthy at the same time? Win-win-win 🙂

Bike Tours in and around Peniche

Península do Baleal (2 km)
Actually, not a real bike tour, but the small and narrow streets on the Baleal peninsula are definitely worth a look. Between classic Portuguese beach bars, there are small and good restaurants, unique cliffs, a nice view, and beautiful sunsets. Marriage proposals have already been made there.

Tour de Peniche (18 km)
Ideally, you should go around the Peninsula de Peniche by bike. You can also go by car, but it is only half as beautiful. Start from the south end of the bay to Papoa Beach. There you can take a break and walk over the bridge onto the rocky Headland. Next stop is Cabo Carveiro, the second most western point of mainland Europe. On the way, you can admire rocks in sandwich construction, minerals from the Toarcium era, and the Berlenga Islands. Then go to the blow hole, pass the former prison as well as the restaurant line-up of Peniche, and back again. Voilà, Tour de Peniche.

Lagoa de Óbidos and Castelo de Óbidos (50 km)
Many roads lead to Rome, and there are at least as many different routes to Óbidos. You have the choice between sandy, sticky, field, and forest paths. It is best to use a navigation app or MTB trail maps. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

Mountain Bike Trails in Peniche
The best mountain bike trails start north of Lagide in Baleal. Along the coast and in the pine forests from Ferrel to Praia D´el Rey you will find some easy trails. On days with little swell and some luck you can catch up, overtake or leave some surfing legends from Baleal behind. The MTB app of your trust is best used for the different trails.
